The reduction of people strategy continues at Microsoft. The company said it will lay off 7,800 people, mainly in the business of mobile phones purchased from Nokia and has been struggling to grow.
The reduction means a cut of 6% in the labor force and is in addition to another dismissal process 18 thousand people, which was announced last year and is ongoing. This process also focuses on workers who came from Nokia.
The announcement was made in an email sent to employees, and published by Microsoft, written by the CEO, Satya Nadella. The email said that the business unit responsible for mobile phones will be restructured and that there will be strategic changes. “We are moving from a strategy to grow an autonomous business phones for a strategy to grow a vibrant ecosystem for Windows.”
At present, it is mainly the Microsoft branded phones (some models even have the Nokia brand) using Windows Phone system, which has a lower share of 3% of the market. The remaining manufacturers prefer the Android platform, which has had greater ability to attract consumers. Manufacture the devices themselves is, however, a different strategy that Microsoft used during most of its history, which was dedicated to creating software that could be used in other business equipment.
Last month, Nadella had already announced changes in top management, including the departure of Stephen Elop, who was responsible for the mobile unit and was the CEO of Nokia when Microsoft bought this business the Finnish multinational.
