Only in 11% of cases is that domestic violence results in prison – the Minute News

Most of the perpetrators of domestic violence ends with probation. The Permanent Observatory for Portuguese Justice of the Centre for Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra realize that 500 inquiries only 100 resulted in a court sentence.

Of the 100 sentences analyzed, 30 were acquitted and 70 damning, but, of these, 62 were suspended. Ie 89% of those convicted was free. And only 11% went to prison, says the Journal News.

These data come from the study ‘Evaluation of court decisions on domestic violence’ presented in Parliament, according to the Public.

This means that there are few offenders who end up in prison effective, something that raises doubts about the dangers for victims, despite the legislative changes which now provide that a suspended sentence should be accompanied by measures of its protection .

Professor of the School of Criminology of the University of Porto law, Cândido Agra, tells the newspaper Público that “provision must be made to prevent crime.”

Almost 91% of the convicts are men and almost 40% of the cases had the motivation to non-acceptance of the end of the relationship.
