The Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores registered on Thursday 32 occurrences, no casualties, the islands of São Miguel and Terceira due to bad weather that is affecting Central and Eastern groups, which are under red notice.
The central groups (Graciosa, São Jorge, Faial, Pico and Terceira) and eastern (São Miguel and Santa Maria) are under red warning, the most serious of a range of four, from 1:00 a.m. until at 08h00 due to forecast heavy rainfall.
Speaking to Lusa News Agency, Barbara Castle, head of the Regional Civil Protection Service Firefighters and the Azores, said that in the early evening and at dawn today there were 32 small occurrences in Terceira (core group) and St. Michael (Eastern Group).
“In third island were no reports of flooding and track obstruction due to problems with public sewers and culverts that were quickly resolved. In S. Miguel, the highest incidence was in the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação, “he said.
According to Barbara Castle, in the Northeast, some roads were broken and two houses were flooded due to overflow of streams.
“In the area of the quarry, northeast of the county, there was a more complicated situation to drag logs to the public road and a house was damaged. However, there is no record of victims, we had only three people who went into hypothermia and by their own means to the health center and were assisted, “he said.
The official also indicated that in the municipality of Population some roads were inaccessible.
“At the moment no longer raining and the teams are in place to help people. The monitor the situation are elements of civil protection, municipalities, social workers and the Regional Directorate of the Forest, “he said.
In addition to the Central and Eastern groups, also Western (islands of Corvo and Flores) is under orange warning, the second most serious of a four-level, also due to heavy rain between 01:00 and 08:00 today.
The Portuguese Institute of Ocean and Atmosphere (IPMA) also placed around the Azores under yellow warning, the third most serious of a four-scale due to the forecast of thunderstorms.
The red warning is the most serious of a four-scale and is issued by IPMA whenever there is a weather situation of extreme risk.
According to IPMA, the orange warning is the most serious second in a four-scale and implies a weather situation of moderate to high risk.
But the yellow warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a risk for certain activities that depend on the weather.
