Number of forest fires more than doubled compared to 2014 – Daily News – Lisbon

The number of forest fires more than doubled this year compared to 2014, having registered 10,695 fire occurrences, higher than the average of the last 10 years, according to data presented today.

In press conference held at the National Civil Protection Authority (ANPC), the national operational commander, José Manuel Moura, said the fighting device response has been “remarkable” and “success” despite the increase in the number of occurrences of fire, a balance of the first month of the most critical stage in forest fires.

According to the figures available, 10,695 fires were recorded between January 1 and July 31, while in the same period last year had triggered 4165.

The burnt area has more than tripled this year, with forest fires reached an area of ​​27,921 hectares, while in the same period 2014 the flames consumed 7,575.

The commander said that “the number of ignitions and area burned” was higher than the average of the last 10 years between January and June, but in July, the fires reached similar values ​​while the area burned was lower.
