Madeira.Tubarões in sight – Express

The beach of Palms in the municipality of Santa Cruz, east side of Madeira, was on Wednesday banned to swimmers for about an hour due to the sighting of two sharks just meters from the shore, informed the Naval Command of Madeira .

The warning was given at 16h44, having been sent to the location of a vessel Maritime Police. Shortly after, he rushed to the same zone one SANAS team (Madeira Association for Relief Sea).

For prevention, was hoisted the red flag on the beach and bathers were informed of the situation.

The commander of the Captaincy of the Port of Funchal, Félix Marques, told the Lusa agency that sharks concerned, popularly known as Caneja or porbeagle, are a harmless species to humans.

Their presence 300 meters from the coast, on the beach of Palms, was due to a school who passed by and served food to them. Once the shoal scattered, sharks, which measured just over a meter in length, also moved away.

At 18h00 the green flag was again hoisted and the situation on the beach was normalized.

This is the second time in the space of two days, which are marrachos sighted close to shore. On Tuesday, a beach in Machico, east of the island, was also banned from swimming for a while because of a shark that walked around.
