After several months in which sales of tablets have shown signs of slowing down, the analyst firm IDC came revise downwards the estimates for this year’s sales in Western Europe and North America , pointing to a stagnant compared to the figures of last year.

Since Apple introduced the first iPad in 2010, essentially ushering in this product category, the tablets – and hybrid devices that integrate keyboard too – have experienced rapid growth. In Western markets, according to a note published by IDC on Friday, sales in 2013 were 25% higher than the previous year.

In emerging markets, however, the reality is quite different and brands still have room to grow. Sales of tablets rose 88% last year and are expected to increase 12% over 2014.

“When we look at the global, it is easy to say that the market for tablets is slowing. But when we begin to enter the regional dynamics, we realize that there is still appetite for this product category, “wrote analyst Jean Philippe Bouchard.

In Portugal, however, the demand for tablets still seems lively. According to a note from GfK released this week, which does not specify numbers, “are the tablets that continue to leverage this sector [of IT], still recording strong growth in both units, either in value. “

In terms of turnover, the Portuguese market for information technology products grew 6.6% last quarter compared to the same period of 2013, although it fell in the first three months of year, mainly due to lower demand for laptops.

According to previous figures from GfK, were sold last year 800 thousand units in Portugal.
