California adopts law requiring phones to have anti-theft system – TeK.sapo

The purpose of the measure, which takes effect from July 2015, is to reverse the growth trend in the theft of this type of equipment that has skyrocketed in recent months.

It provides that all mobile phones sold in the state of California have a system that allows easily turn off a device remotely in a situation of theft.

The mechanism may be embedded in hardware or software on the machine and should be effective enough to ensure that the phone can not be corrected unless the legitimate user’s permission.

The system has however also to ensure that the normal functioning of the phone can be restored if the equipment is recovered by the rightful owner, defends the law identified as Kill Switch.

Between 2012 and 2013 the theft of mobile phones increased 94% in California, from 1.6 million to 3.1 million. Only in San Francisco, more than 65% of robberies recorded by the police last year were from mobile phones.

Some manufacturers already offer this type of functionality, a policy which from next year will have to be adopted by all companies that want to sell products in that state.
