Science confirms: to make love makes us believe more in God – Vision

From 0 to 10, where would put your level of spirituality? If the answer is above eight, know that this may be related with the amount of love that goes the share and, above all, to do. Is that it seems that the idea that “having sex can lead us to heaven” is now scientifically proven. Responsible: Oxytocin, the hormone of love.

Since there is a lot to know that the sexual practice is related to our health and well-being. It influences our mood and also stimulates some social skills such as trust, empathy, and altruism. The novelty now is that it can increase our belief in God and our predisposition to spirituality, as proven by a recent study carried out by Duke University in North Carolina. Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and is sobretrudo released during the sexual act, but also, in smaller quantities, whenever we hug someone, or establecemos contact physical, for example. Acts as a hormone and as neurotransmitter and affects various parts of the brain.

The study gathered randomly 83 middle-aged men to which was administered the hormone and an equal number received a placebo. Contrary to what happened in the second group, the first reported a more spiritual experience and this was reflected, for example, in the most positive emotions during the meditation, especially gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love, and serenity.

After you take into account which these men belonged or not to a religious organization, it was found that those tested who received oxytocin were more likely to say that spirituality is important in her life and that she has value and meaning. In addition, inclined more to agree with ideas such as “All lives are connected among themselves” or “there is a higher plane of awareness and spirituality that connects us all.”

since the study had as subjects only men, the results can only be applied to male gender, a time that the hormone operates, as a general rule, differently in men and women. It is also important to clarify that the purposes of the study were stronger in participants with a particular variant of the gene CD38, which regulates the release of the hormone in the brain of the hypothalamus to neurons.

This study comes in the wake of others who have already previously related to spirituality and meditation with the well-being and health. The social psychologist, Patty Van Cappallen is responsible for the research, and told the University newspaper, the Duke Today, that they were “interested in understanding the biological factors that intensify spiritual experiences,” he says.

As a conclusion, points out: “oxytocin seems to be part of how our bodies support the religious and spiritual beliefs”.

- Helps to combat stress

- Is used in anti-depressants and ansióliticos

- it Is frequently administered in childbirth to cause uterine contractions

- Facilitates the arrival of espermatozoide to the egg at fertilization

- Controls part of the pleasure of orgasm

- Promotes interpersonal relations

- Reduces the feeling of fear of the unknown

- Helps to stimulate the sense of intimacy

For all this, it is considered part of the quartet of happiness, to the side of dopamine, of serotonin and of endorphins.

The big plus of this hormone, naturally produced is that, whether in large or small quantities, it has effects that endure in time, as evidenced by the men’s group on which this study focuses, who have witnessed the levels of spirituality even after they are under the effect of chemical hormone.

The amount produced of this hormone is not, of course, the only variable that explains our level of spirituality, and Van Cappellen alert to the fact that the result of not being able to, at least for now, be generalized. The results of the study are published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.
