iOS can cross-reference to determine whether the nearby device is reliable, via address book. Before you start exchanging data, the sending machine of the information determines whether the receiver has enough space, support the necessary networks and battery time to perform the operation. If so, sending data starts.

The data is sent in encrypted manner, which means that the device receiving would have no way to access them. Once stored in the receiver, there are some possibilities: the user can set a deadline for the owner to seek the information. If the deadline is broken, the receiver iPhone erase the data automatically. Another possibility is that the device that received the backup upload automatically to the account of the issuer iCloud, so the device to connect to an Internet network.

The idea was submitted for registration patent in February 2014. It is unclear whether Apple plans to use this feature in future versions of iOS.
