Seven firefighters and military of the GNR were injured on Thursday following an ammonia leak in an ice factory in Olhão.

The factory employees have fulfilled safety procedures, away from the site when the incident occurred, according to the captain of the port of Olhão, Nunes Ferreira, cited by Lusa agency.

Upon arrival, firefighters tried logo contain the leak, but seven members of the corporation and a military GNR were injured – one of them by skin contact and others through contact with liquid ammonia. By early evening Thursday, they were all out of danger, according to Nunes Ferreira.

The ammonia is a liquid solution of ammonia, a gas that is present in nature. It is used in various applications, in particular as a refrigerant or cleaning products. Once released, it turns quickly into gas and ultimately be absorbed naturally.

The main risk to human health is the contact at high concentrations with skin, eyes and respiratory system and may cause burns , irritation and, in extreme cases, deadly complications.

According to Nunes Ferreira, 19h leakage was contained. A 100 meters around the site security perimeter was established, until all the liquid spill to evaporate and dissipate in the air. “Inside the plant is more difficult this dissipation happen, but hopefully within two hours to have the situation resolved,” said the captain of the port of Olhão Lusa.
