Minister announces 350 million euros of EU funds to refurbish 130 schools – Digital Journal

The Minister of Education and Science, Nuno Crato, announced that they are allocated 350 million euros of EU funds from Portugal in 2020 to the school retrofitting, rehabilitation and upgrading of about 130 schools.

Speaking to journalists in Viseu, the minister said that, “in addition to these 350 million, there are works that are continually being made, or the responsibility of local authorities or the Ministry of Education”.

“There we stopped during these years, we continued to work for many schools could improve their conditions. The Parque Escolar has done its work, now in a much more modest and prudently, and will deliver for the next school year one dozen schools, “he added.

According to Nuno Crato, also municipalities” have always been working for schools were reclassified, rehabilitated and students have the best possible conditions “, as was the case of Viseu.

The minister was now in Viseu to conclude a protocol on the progress of the rehabilitation works of elementary school Onix and Secondary Viriato, which have long been claimed.

According with the president of Viseu House, Almeida Henriques (PSD), the investment in the two schools will amount to two million euros – 1.4 million euros for the Onix and 570 thousand for the Viriato – funded by the Portugal 2020 funds .

Viseu Chamber comparticipará works in 15%, ie 300 000 euros, to the mayor, is “an investment rather than a cost.”

Almeida Henriques recalled that the intervention promises on Onix (which has 988 students) and Viriato (which has 679 students) are old.

“These are promises that generated frustration and disbelief. Promises to one embodiment often, too often delayed, “he said.

Almeida Henriques ensured that the local authority will” proceed immediately with the making of projects, so that, once open the first round of applications “may be” at the forefront “.

” The Center in 2020 will have to open an application to the Board of Viseu, following this protocol, present the candidacy of these two schools, “he said, adding there will be the concern not to harm school performance with the works.

At the end of the afternoon, the CDU of Viseu issued a statement accusing the government and the Chamber of making “promises for electoral consumption” , specifically with regard to the works at the two schools.

“Why only now just over a month before the election, the House and the government say they want to solve a serious problem that knew and that while opposition claimed to be urgent resolution? “he asked.

Nuno Crato responded arguing that” the mapping of school requalification only now done and could even take longer, but the government worked in a very fast pace with European Commission to the main criteria of Portugal 2020 “.

” Now it were established that this process is in its final phase and therefore this was the time when we can deliver on this promise. We would like to have been able to do this for four years but could not because there was no Community funds because they were exhausted, because Portugal was a very difficult situation, “he said.
