Google postpones plans to test modular smartphone – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

The Google announced that it will postpone the test of its modular smartphone. The launch was scheduled for this year in Puerto Rico, but the company says that the launch will not be done before 2016. The company did not explain the reasons for postponement, but promises innovations in the coming weeks.

The US company revealed on Twitter, quoted by the BBC on Tuesday, August 18, which decided to postpone the launch of this new modular smartphone. This project that Google gave the name “Ara Project” will not be tested before 2016.

Google had planned to distribute 20 to 30 smartphones in Puerto Rico to test the Ara Project, but now the release has been delayed and probably the test will take place in the United States.

This first modular world smartphone will allow users to mount your smartphone customized. Components can be added or removed easily without the need for substantial changes to the smartphone.

This Ara Project is the bet of Google on an open platform, with free hardware to create modular smartphones. The platform will include a structural basis with modules that will form the smartphones as the user wants. These modules may be a monitor, a keyboard or an extra battery.

From the base, users will be able to exchange the faulty components or older, thus providing life cycles longer for the device, which means that a scratched screen or an exhausted battery will not be as expensive to replace and will allow you to create a personalized and targeted smartphone for specific tasks.

According to the BBC, the first public demonstration of this technology occurred in the Google developer conference and was well received.

It is expected that these modular smartphones have the price $ 50 (45 euros).
