So the fire, which broke out in the warehouses of Grandella in Rua do Carmo, destroyed 18 buildings, caused two deaths and 73 injured. In fighting the flames took part in 1000 firefighters backed by 300 vehicles.

Sponsored by the city of Lisbon and the Regiment Fire Brigade (RSB), the ceremony aimed to honor not only the firefighters who fought in the great fire of 1988, but also “all men and women who daily strive to protect and City defense “, as noted by the commander of the RSB, Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Patricio.

At 09.45 hours, representatives of the various corporations that participated in fighting the fire started from the 1st Street in December and climbed in silence, Rua do Carmo. The silence of rings, the funeral march and dawn, was followed by the laying of a wreath on the tombstone evocative of the great fire by the Civil Protection and Safety councilor, Carlos Manuel Castro, and by Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Patricio.

In his speech, the councilor of CM Lisbon thanked “inspiration and dedication” of the firefighters and recalled “a tragedy that marked the city.”

“Today Lisbon is prepared for such an eventuality but we must continue to give better conditions for firefighters and raise awareness to prevent accidents like this happen again,” he said.

The ceremony also included the presence of two of the firefighters who participated in fighting the flames to August 25, 1988. “We worked 16 hours straight. The flames were huge, we had no way to approach us, “he recalled the commander Lucas New. “It was a day of great suffering. Fortunately the conditions are now much better, “corroborated the deputy Manuel Pinho.
