It is one of the few indicators that Portugal is far ahead of the European Union: 70% of Internet users in Portugal last year used social networks, significantly above the 57% which was the average of the 28 Member States <. / p>

In this respect, the difference between Portugal and the rest of the EU has become more pronounced, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) said on Thursday. Two years earlier, in 2011, only 57% of users in Portugal had access to social networks, a value closer to the EU average, which was then 53%.

The Portuguese also stand out from others European countries for using the Internet more often to make voice calls or video, which in many cases are free. Here, however, the difference is smaller:. 36% in Portugal to 33% in the EU average

The data on social networks and online calls were calculated by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU European and accompany the release of the survey results to the use of information technologies made earlier this year by the INE.

The INE figures show that access the Internet outside the home and the workplace is a practice 57% of users in Portugal and 48% already do on mobile phones, more than the 38% who use laptops (there are people who use both types of devices).

Since the Online file storage (a couple of mobile devices, another strong trend in the information technology sector) services are used by 26% of users, most of which uses free solutions. Photographs are the most common type of file (85% of users of these services), followed by text, spreadsheets and electronic presentations (79%) and music files (53%). A fifth says also use these services to share

In e-commerce, the numbers keep an upward trend, albeit slow.: 17% of all people between 16 and 74 say they have made online purchases (equivalent to 26% of those who use the Internet), two percentage points more than in 2013. The practice is most common between the ages of 25 and 34 years and is slightly more common among men than among women.

Internet penetration continues to evolve slowly, after the significant increase has happened over the past decade: 65% of households have Internet at home, the majority of which broadband. Last year, the Internet reached 62% of households.
