Experts discuss rules on nutrition labeling in force in … – RTP

These new rules on nutrition labeling, which takes effect in December, emanate a European guideline and will be subject of discussion at the seminar “Quality and Food Safety / Food Law Implications”, organized by the Association of Nutritionists and follows on Friday .

In the opinion of Alexandra Benedict, the Order of bastonária Nutritionists, this new legislation will bring benefits to the consumer, because is mandatory nutrition labeling.

“We expect a positive impact on the health of consumers with clearer, accurate and objective. We believe that consumers can make better choices and possibly long-term, more enlightened, they can make the replacement of unhealthy foods to healthier “Lusa said.

The official stressed, incidentally, that “most of the diseases that we suffer resulting from power.”

One such example is reported by Benedict Alexandra the description of the amount of salt in foods that currently appear in the form of sodium

“Sodium is salt, but not everyone knows that. We should not exceed 5 grams of salt per day. By passing the salt to be described, the consumer can have a closer look and realize it is too much or too little,” he explained.

Any other information – energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt – must necessarily be indicated on the labels of all foods.

Another “very relevant” question is that allergen products start to appear, specified in the list of ingredients, and not just under the generic form of “may contain traces”, as happens now, he added.

Another requirement is the indication of the date of freezing of meat, meat products and frozen fish products.

The Order of Dietitians is considering the possibility of using the output of the regulation of actions to promote training and development of guidance documents for operators – industry, distribution and restoration – and the general public.

Alexandra Benedict recognizes that operators now have more information and knowledge on the subject, but for consumers believe that it is important “to increase literacy” regarding labeling.

The size of the characters was also subject to correction, becoming mandatory minimum size for easier reading labels.

The new law also contains rules for distance selling, online sales, to “be adequate to today.”

The Friday seminar will be chaired by bastonária the Order of Dietitians and will be attended by the Secretary of State for Food and Agribusiness Research, with the Director-General of Food and Veterinary (SAGD) and several technicians SAGD, the Authority Food and Economic Safety (ASAE) and companies and universities.
