European vehicles will have automatic emergency call – EN Journal

Vehicles manufactured in the European Union will have to be equipped, from 2018, with eCall. This is a wireless automatic device for emergency calls. In case of accident, the vehicle itself is to ‘connect’ to 112, the European emergency number.

From 2018, eCall, an automatic wireless emergency call, you must be fitted as standard on all vehicles.

The features is to allow device in the event of a crash, faster communication with the emergency services, speeding up response time and ensuring a distress faster, which should contribute to a reduction in the number of fatalities.

The installation of this automatic emergency call system was adopted today by the ministers with the protection of the EU Transport, meeting in Brussels.

The eCall, which automatically activates an alarm signal to the 112 (the European emergency number, must be installed on all motor vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2018.

According to the resolution of the European Ministers, the infrastructure for this automatic call system must be operational by 1 October 2017.

It is not known if manufacturers can charging consumers the cost of installation of equipment, although the European agreement guaranteeing free access to all consumers.

The eCall, which will be compatible with satellite navigation systems, may not allow a constant location of the vehicle.

Data from previous locations are continually deleted and can not be communicated to third parties without the consent of the vehicle owner.

The European Parliament should ratify this decision of the Council of Ministers of the European Union by the end of the semester and it is not foresee any changes to the model announced today.
