Day of Port marked the first time September 10 – Reuters

The first edition of the Port Wine Day, to be marked on September 10, pays homage to the winemakers, merchants and wine produced in the Douro, the oldest regulated and demarcated wine region in the world.

It was precisely the September 10, 1756 that the demarcated Douro region was created through the establishment of the Company General of Agriculture of the Upper Douro Vineyards, the Marques de Pombal.

“The Port Wine Day (Day of Port wine) is a day of celebration more special Port wine,” Lusa said today the president of the Institute of Port and Douro Wines (IVDP), Manuel de Novaes Cabral.

It is a day too, he added, a tribute to producers, traders and all stakeholders that, throughout history, helped consolidate the Port as “Ambassador of the region, city and country in the world ».

And for this first edition, IVDP organized a seminar, held in Porto, where topics such as’ Challenges of the Asian market ‘and’ The future of harmonization of food will be discussed and wines’.

Manuel Cabral stressed that the Asian market from China, South Korea or other countries, “is relevant and raises many expectations.”

For this seminar were invited experts who know the territory and, therefore, may unravel the “effective value of these markets ‘and that the’ best way to approach and penetrate there.”

“Valia markets and how to approach these markets, this is the main objective of our debate, “the president argued IVDP.

Among the guests stand out expert Debra Meiburg, arriving from Hong Kong and is considered the seventh most influential woman in the world of wine and the sommelier Ferran Centelles.

Manuel Cabral said that “there is still much work to do in the diversification of markets’ Port wine, but also in” support of traditional markets. ”

Currently, there is a large concentration of sales of this product in countries such as France, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, United States of America and Great Britain, which buy more than 80% of this wine.

“We have to find new markets, but we must also work better in today, particularly finding ways to penetrate with value-added products, in particular the special categories of port wine,” he said.

The official stressed that “the marketing lines are in positive territory.”

Between January and June this year, 141 million euros of port wine were sold, 2.3% more than in the same period last year, with a significant increase in special categories.

“We are on the path of recovery of the product,” he stressed.

Sales are expected to increase further in the last four months of the year during which the sale of port wine usually has an increase of about 40%.

During the afternoon the Port Wine Day, the protagonists are the producers who will give to know and to taste the best wines of the vintage first decade of this century.

The next day, experts and journalists who attend the event are invited to visit the Douro.
