Lisbon. The list of streets more pedestrian accidents

The Lisbon parishes of Alvalade, New Avenues, Streams and Benfica recorded between 2010 and 2013, a greater number of pedestrian accidents over the others.

And almost one third of the total of these accidents in the city, according to the city.

During this period, pedestrian accidents in the city caused 2,746 victims – 2,539 minor injuries, 180 serious injuries and 27 deaths – equivalent to an average of 60 casualties per month, according to the latest data provided by the portfolio of Rights Social Chamber of Lisbon with regard to the European Road Safety Day, being celebrated today.

In 2013, pedestrian collisions accounted for about a quarter of all accidents (to which is added the skidding and collisions, for example), but had a weight of more than 60% in all fatalities.
>
In the same year, one in 10 seniors had serious or fatal injuries due to road kill, while this type of injury had a lower weight in adults (7%) and young people (6%).

This means that “the elderly population is a particularly vulnerable group of road kill, especially for the severity of the injury resulting from the accident,” explains Hall.

According to the municipality, the type most representative trampling in the years analyzed, was one in which the pedestrian crossing the crosswalk (in zebra). In fact, victims of pedestrian accidents in crosswalks (in zebra or light) correspond to 43% of the total.

Another conclusion is that the number of pedestrian accidents victims in pedestrian passages with green light was superior to those with red light.

The councilor of Social Rights of the Council of Lisbon, João Afonso stressed that must change attitudes concerning the movement in the city and that “pedestrians have to be at the center of thought.”

“Every citizen is pawn, first of all, and then walk to public transport, bicycle or car,” he said.

Regarding the fact that much of pedestrian accidents have happened in crosswalks and with the green light, João Afonso explained that, in these parts, “people cross the trust and motorists should respect [pedestrians] and do not respect”.

To counteract this phenomenon, the mayor listed traffic calming measures already implemented in the city, such as raised mushroom crossings in Gold Street (Baixa), which “facilitated the speed and greatly increased the security level” of pedestrians, and areas 30 in Benfica and Alvalade, which “helped to regulate the speed.”

João Afonso also spoke of “containment zones”, with schools, and “choke-way” in which the “distance of passage becomes shorter and the cars slow down.”

The “traffic calming” will be debated today at 09:30 at a conference in the Town Hall (the file room).

There will be also presented data contained in a report by the portfolio of Social Rights of the House Lisbon under the Pedestrian Accessibility Plan, adding information from other entities.

will also be discussed “Fundamental rights at the doorstep” and the “easing of importance to the expansion of the cycling network.”

In 2013, almost 5,500 people were run over in mainland Portugal. In the municipality of Lisbon, accidents caused 670 victims, more than 12% of the national total, according to the National Road Safety Authority.
