Death Funeral Mariano Gago takes place today in the Algarve – News Minute to

The funeral of former Science Minister and Higher Education Mariano Gago, will take place today, in the cemetery of Pechão, Olhão, where will follow at 12:00, after the ceremonies in the Basilica da Estrela in Lisbon.

José Mariano Gago Rebelo died on Friday at his home in Lisbon, after 66 years of sudden death victim, after nearly two years of fighting cancer, told Lusa next scientist source.

Mariano Gago was Minister of Science and Technology 1995 to 2002, the XIII and XIV Constitutional Governments, led by António Guterres and Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education in the new governments of the Socialist Party – the XVII and XVIII Constitutional Governments, 2005-2011 – this time with Joseph Socrates as prime minister.

The particle physicist, Mariano Gago was the personality that longer held the position of minister, after 1974, a total of 12 years.

Member of the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europaea), founded in 1988, Mariano Gago was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of St. James Sword in 1992.

Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho said on Friday it has received with deep sorrow the news of the death of Mariano Gago, who considered a ‘distinguished academic “and a” man who served his country “in high government positions.

The Minister of Education and Science, Nuno Crato, said Mariano Gago as “a bright personality, bubbly” that “much is for science in Portugal.”

The president of the Institute technical, Arlindo Oliveira, the death of Mariano Gago leaves “a very large gap in science,” considering the former minister a “very intelligent person who always gave his best to serve the country.”

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) lamented, with “deep regret”, the death of Mariano Gago, enhancing their “invaluable contribution to science, technology and scientific culture in Portugal.”

The old Prime Minister António Guterres expressed his “deeply shocked” by the death of Mariano Gago, highlighting his “courage” in the fight against the dictatorship, the scientist “internationally recognized” and his “exceptional contribution” to the scientific development.
