Identified 15 new genetic variants that increase risk of breast cancer
For the study analyzed the genetic material of more than 120,000 women descendants Europeans.
Scientists have identified 15 new genetic variants that increase the risk of breast cancer, revealed on Monday a study published in the journal Nature Genetics .
90 The study raises the amount of “hot spots” of human DNA, in which the variation of the genetic code is linked to the development of the disease. Teams from the Institute for Cancer Research, London and the University of Cambridge, both in the UK, analyzed the genetic material of more than 120 000 women of European descent, some of which have had breast cancer.
The collected data allowed the identification of 15 new single nucleotide polymorphisms, variants of a single DNA base (genetic material), which increase the risk of breast cancer. “We are near the time when we can begin to establish that the risk of a woman inherit breast cancer, from tests for several genetic variations,” said one of the study co-authors, Montserrat Garcia-Closas, a professor at the Institute for Research Cancer.
According to the researcher, the findings could facilitate the development of new evaluation tests the risk of cancer, to add a new panel of genetic markers.
“Each of the markers have a small effect on the risk of having the disease, but combining the information of many, we can accurately identify which women can develop breast cancer and adopt strategies to prevent it, “he argued Montserrat Garcia-Closas.
