As reported on Thursday, 4 to NASA a asteroid of about 20 meters, pass “very close” Earth Day on Sunday 7/9. But the American space agency rule out that this asteroid poses a threat to the planet
.
The asteroid “2014 RC” will pass the closest point of land at 15h18 (GMT) this Sunday (7) over New Zealand. The celestial body was discovered on August 31 by program Catalina Sky Survey (CSS), operated by Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, United States , which uses data from three telescopes to search for comets, asteroids and near-Earth objects
.
The asteroid was also detected independently by the next night Observatory telescope Pan-STARRS located in Hawaii and both reported their observations to Minor Planet Center of the International Astronomical Union , Cambridge. At the moment of closeness, the asteroid will be approximately one tenth of the distance from the center of the Earth to the Moon, or 40,000 km
.
The scientists point out that despite this “closeness”, the asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye, though amateur astronomers that have small telescopes may be able to capture the appearance of the asteroid, which will move rapidly following its orbit
.
The asteroid will go through the outside of the of orbit communications satellites and meteorological they orbit about 36,000 km above the surface of our planet. The scientific community will have a unique opportunity to observe and learn more about the asteroids, says NASA, which says that “he does not seem to bring any danger to Earth or satellites.”
Despite the low risk of it falling in Earth , scientists estimate that its orbit should bring it back to the vicinity of our planet in the future and their movements will be watched closely
