A “mysterious” explosion felt around 11 am Saturday in Managua, capital of Nicaragua, has left the residents worried about the possibility of an earthquake or the eruption of one of more than 20 volcanoes in the country. However, the discovery of a crater about 12 meters brings evidence of a completely different phenomenon.
According to Sky News, citing government scientists Nicaragua, the crater, discovered near the capital’s airport , have been the result of the fall of a meteorite that probably came loose from an asteroid that passed by Earth.
“All samples collected at the site correspond to a meteorite and not the other type of event. Firstly we have the seismic record, which coincides with the time of impact, and [observed] the characteristic conical shape [this phenomenon] at the impact site, “said Jose Millan, Institute of Earth Studies of Nicaragua (INETER).
The investigator added that for now, we must conclude that the object has fallen into an uninhabited area.
“We have to celebrate the fact that [the meteorite] have fallen in an area where, thank God, did not cause any danger to the population. “
The same source added that the composition of the star has not been determined, and that this time it is not known if the impact caused its disintegration or if the meteorite is still buried beneath the crater.
Humberto Garcia, the astronomy center of Autonomous National University of Nicaragua believed that the meteorite may be related to an asteroid was expected to pass by the Earth during the weekend, the Asteroid 2014 RC.
