Fake priest tried for alleged theft of parts in Ovar church – Daily News – Lisbon

The Court of Aveiro will start judging on Monday the case of “false priest” of Barcelos accused of having stolen religious pieces in the Church of Ovar, valued at five thousand euros.

Augustine Charity, 42, is accused of theft crimes functions, fraud and robbery allegedly committed around Easter 2013, when the defendant was able to celebrate Mass and later convince a clerk to hand you a cup and two pyxes (vessels which are kept the hosts) in crafted silver.

Known as “false priest” for having chaired the religious celebrations all over the country without being authorized to do so, the defendant has has previous convictions for computer fraud crimes, aggravated fraud, unlawful driving and usurpation of functions.

In 2014, he came to be sentenced to three years and three months in prison by the Court of Braga, the crimes of theft and qualified fraud, but the defense appealed to the Guimarães ratio, which overturned the decision at first instance and acquitted the accused.
