Who mistreat animals can get stuck from today – TVI24

The law criminalizes the mistreatment of animals enters into force today, and provides that “whoever, without legitimate cause, inflict pain, suffering or any other bad physical to a companion animal abuse is punishable by imprisonment.”

The law, published in the Official Gazette on August 29, states that “whoever, without legitimate cause, inflict pain, suffering or any other bad physical to a companion animal abuse is punishable with imprisonment up to one year or a fine of up to 120 days. ”

The same law states that for who make such acts, and that “the death of the animal, the deprivation of important organ or limb or serious and permanent affectation of its ability to walk,” the it will be “punished with imprisonment up to two years or a fine of up to 240 days.”

In regard to pets, the law provides that “whoever, having the duty to store, monitor or pet watch, the abandon, thereby putting in danger their food and the provision of care owed to it, shall be punished with imprisonment up to six months or with a fine not exceeding 60 days. ”

The draft law criminalizing the mistreatment animals was approved in parliament with the votes of the PSD, PS, ENP, BE and CDS-PP, bench noted that two votes against and two abstentions.

Members of the CDS-PP Abel Baptista and Helder Amaral voted against the new sanctions regime and Cecilia Meireles and Michael Seufert abstained, announcing the delivery voting ballots.

The PCP also opted for abstention by considering the problem of animal abuse should be a priority response ‘preventive measures’ and disagrees with the “criminalization mandating implementation of prison sentences.”
