Walmart and other giant invest in competing system to pay Apple for failing to pay fees to operators and technology company
Some of the largest networks of US retailers refused to adopt the Apple Pay , new payment service via mobile phone from Apple. Walmart is among the 50 companies in the industry who chose not to accept payments with the iPhone, along with pharmacy chains Rite Aid and CVS HealthCorp. The Apple Pay, released in September, is a mobile payment app that allows consumers to make transactions when approaching the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus of readers installed on physical box stores.

The refusal of networks to use the Apple Pay is due to two closely related reasons. First, the fact that companies are investing in a competing system called Current C, which should eliminate the payment of fees to operators of credit card – Visa and Mastercard, for example, charge between 2% and 3% of the value of every transaction. The system is being developed by the consortium Merchants Customer Exchange (MCX).
“The economy and the benefits of having your own payment system is one of the main reasons for rejection,” said Hitesh Sheth, CEO of Vectra Networks, a company that develops information technology solutions for the retail
It’s just for trying to escape the fees that operators pay Apple reject (that is the second reason.): the system adds another intermediary in the payment chain, Apple. Newspaper report Financial Times published in September indicated that retailers would have to pay (more) 0.15% to account for Apple’s service. For the same reason, retailers who refused to adopt Google Wallet, similar to Pay Apple.
Apple has tried to minimize the problem during a conference held by the American newspaper Wall Street Journal . Tim Cook, Apple CEO, announced that more than 1 million consumers have registered their credit cards on Apple Pay within 72 hours after the start of operation of the service last week. “Many other companies will enter (in service). We will negotiate with many banks, for example, in addition to expanding the service to the rest of the world,” Cook said.
“We are disappointed with the fact that both Rite Aid and CVS decide to keep your consumers to use the payment method they choose, “said Jim Issokson, spokesman for Mastercard. The Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove said the company is focused on MCX as one of the “heavyweights” of the consortium. Target, on the other hand, said he will continue to support the MCX, but allow users to make purchases in your virtual store using Apple’s system.
Apple has not announced when the iPhone 6 and Plus come to Brazil, or when Apple Pay will be available for Brazilian users. According to industry sources, the company is negotiating local service operation with banks and there are already more than one million points of sale with infrastructure to accept payments via NFC technology. The chip required to authorize transactions is only present in newer versions of Apple’s smartphone, announced in September.
The network partners of Apple Pay account with the 11 largest credit card issuers in the US responsible for 83% of the market, as well as retailers such as the fast-food McDonald’s and Walgreens pharmacies. In total, American consumers can make payments with the iPhone in more than 220,000 stores
