The nurses would be allowed to request additional diagnostic tests to patients waiting in the emergency room, according to a decree published today in the Official Gazette which provides for a trial period of one year.

For this, the clinical management must first define a set of questions (algorithm) to support the health professional option. These algorithms are subject to a quarterly review that passes by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

This algorithm is constructed to a standard of clinical guidance, which has yet to be established. The standard of clinical guidance (NOC) is produced by the DGS in “close collaboration with the Medical,” according to official source of the Ministry of Health.

In fact, according to the Ministry, the standard of clinical guidance is “the first step” and essential for this diploma may have practical effect.

“This screening complement is introduced on a voluntary and experimental basis, with the last one year, the units that are identified by the ARS as those where one can expect greater benefit in reducing wait times,” referred to diploma.

The order determines although all emergency services shall, by 30 September this year, using the latest version of the Manchester triage system – scale that identifies the clinical priority of a patient .

In addition, all emergencies are required to apply the screening of Manchester by the end of this year, and shall implement monthly internal audits.
