Brussels warns that electricity price could rise more than 3.3% in Portugal

Lisbon – Brussels has warned that the rise of 3.3% in average electricity prices in 2015 “will not be enough to achieve the target set for the tariff deficit in 2020″

The price of electricity may rise more than 3.3% this year and the increases may be greater than expected in the coming years for Portugal to meet the goal of reducing the tariff deficit in 2020. It is a warning left the European Commission in the report that follows the warning mechanism of macroeconomic imbalances within the European Semester.

In the document, the European Commission states that the tariff deficit expected to reach a peak of 4,800 million euros this year (estimate that is higher than EUR 400 million initially planned for 2015), “implying that the increase of 3.3% in electricity tariffs in 2015 will not be sufficient to achieve the deficit reduction target by 2020 ‘.

The tariff deficit arises when revenues that accrue by reducing electricity bills are not enough to cover all costs.
