Close to 150 operational combat forest fires – The Ball

Artists CPLP donate 62 works to’Juntos campaign against Fome` (photos) – The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), in partnership with the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO), inaugurated on Thursday in the West Turret Commerce Square in Lisbon, the first of a cycle of 50 exhibitions aimed at raising funds to finance eradication of hunger and malnutrition projects in nine Portuguese-speaking countries, campaign called’Juntos Against Fome`.

Up to 31 patents will be 62 works by 50 artists originating in the CPLP (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Equatorial Guinea, East Timor and Sao Tome and Principe) and the collection which includes this first exposure – the Estoril Congress Center is the next stop in June – consists essentially of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and tapestries but also in photography, including 10 winning photos from a digital photography contest sponsored online.

The works are properly identified and with a price set by the creator and the campaign, and if sold, the artist undertakes to replenish the collection with another piece of his own – for this second part the author donates 30 percent.

The Unite Against Hunger has raised about 70,000 euros – if the 62 works on display are all sold will earn 165,000 euros – which will finance two agricultural projects in Cape Verde, specifically in Ribeira da Vineyard, the island of Sao Vicente and in the Cacheu region of Guinea-Bissau.

Present at the inauguration were ambassadors of Diplomatic Missions with the CPLP, namely Luís de Almeida (Angola), Maria Madalena Neves (Cape Verde), Antonito de Araújo (Timor-Leste), José Roberto Pinto (Brazil) and Faizal Cassam (Mozambique).

A curiosity: one of the sponsors of the campaign – the singer Lenita Gentil is one of the bridesmaids – is the Mozambican musician Costa Neto, author of the hymn Together Against Hunger.

 Guinea-Bissau worries

The opening speeches were over, nor could it be otherwise, of Murade Murargy, Executive Secretary of CPLP and Hélder Muteia, the FAO office director with the CPLP.

“Today the words are not worth much, the art speaks for them. It was not easy to bring together the works of all the artists but when the cause is noble, as is the case, everything is achieved. This is a campaign of a transcendent nobility and I am convinced it will be successful, “noted Murade Murargy.

“We are facing essentially a partnership between CPLP countries, united for a noble cause. Hunger hurts and kills slowly, so hopefully raise awareness. At this time, about 805 million people go hungry and 22 million are from countries of CPLP. The Guinea-Bissau is still having a hard time and is the most worrisome case among the member states of the CPLP “, he stressed Hélder Muteia.
