Two million Portuguese do not go to the family doctor, says minister – Digital Journal

The health minister said today that about two million Portuguese who do not use the family doctor, a higher number to the users even without clinical assigned.

“We have much more with Portuguese GP than those who use it, “said Paulo Macedo told reporters in a comment to the Annual Report on Access to Health Care 2014, released today by the Public newspaper, pointing to 1.4 million users without family doctor at the end of the year past.

The minister said that the number of Portuguese with family doctor has been increasing, but chose to point out that many users do not use clinically assigned to queries.

“We have over the years systematically seven million people who use the National Health Service (NHS) and nine million from family doctor. We have a set of people who have no family doctor and more than two million people who do not use medical family, “he said.

For Paulo Macedo, the priority is to initially assign GP to those in need and those who wish to use it, as the case of pregnant women.

“For those who do not, our concern is to see which ones need. The goal is to cover all people, but in the first instance is to cover those people who want to have a family doctor, “he said.

Even on primary care, the minister admitted that in the future the health centers must have “more comprehensive”, including “medical advice” of some specialties, such as pediatrics.

The Annual Report on Access to Health Care 2014 also showed that the NHS hospitals treated more than six million emergency room.

In 40% of emergency patients received screening bracelets green, blue or white, demonstrating a minor or urgency in attendance.
