Researchers invade drive system remotely – iCarros

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, both researchers from US security, revealed yesterday (21) a failure of the electronic system that equips some models of the FCA group (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) in the US. The pair first demonstrated the vulnerability of vehicles to attacks “hackers”.

Through the central Uconnect Access, which manages the on-board computer and car entertainment systems, researchers were able to control functions of a Jeep Cherokee (pictured) such as radio, air conditioning and horn. However, Miller and Valasek found that it is also possible to control mechanical parts such as steering, accelerating and braking.

The attack was carried out kilometers away as the car semitruck by a highway and was only possible because the central Multimedia has internet access. According to the researchers, after penetrating the system, they rewrote the code chip that controls the central Uconnect to send commands to other electronic key car.

The multimedia system “hacked” is not for sale in Brazil, since the models sold in the country equip a simpler version of equipment without internet access. However, it is worth to pay attention to the vulnerability of vehicles to electronic attacks. In the US, the FCA group already available from July 16 an update to the system that must be installed manually via USB
