The Judiciary Police (PJ) will open an investigation into possible cases of pedophilia in the Church after the Diocese of Coimbra has disclosed the existence of suspected abuse of minors by clergy member.
The complaint came to the diocese through an anonymous email, found the DN will contain the identification of the suspect.
PJ Source confirmed to Lusa that the sexual abuse of minors crime “is a public crime” so “not on a complaint,” and that the Judicial Police “will initiate an investigation” to the case.
According to the same source, “did not get any complaint” to the formal judicial police.
The Vicar General of the Diocese of Coimbra called today in a statement to the complaint situations “concrete” of pedophilia in the Church, after they appeared “suspicious” of the practice of abuse of minors “by a member of the clergy”.
“We are aware of these suspicions in some ways, widely church. We want to safeguard our full transparency,” said Father Pedro Carlos Miranda, vicar general of the diocese of Coimbra.
In the text of the statement released with a request to “be made public for the common good”, it is claimed that “in tune with the Pope Francis, the smaller of the safety concern is a priority for the Church.”
