Lisbon: old cars with new restrictions from tomorrow – TSF Online

Pluck Thursday the new rules that prevent more circular of old cars in much of the municipality of Lisbon, with limits for previous cars to 2000 and 1996.

As of tomorrow, and to avoid polluting emissions, can only walk in the area called 1, Liberty Avenue Low-axis, later cars to 2000. Prior to 1996 vehicles will also be prevented from circulating in zone 2, much broader and bounded by the Avenue Ceuta, North-South axis and avenues of the Armed Forces of the United States Marshal Antonio Spinola, the Holy Constable and Prince Henry.

There are however exceptions: among others, emergency vehicles, historic vehicles, motorcycles and various types of state cars. The vehicles of those who live in the center can also circular in zone 1, even if they are older than 2000, while in zone 2 previous cars are allowed to 1996 residents in the city of Lisbon (ie the limitation only affects those who live in other municipalities).

The municipal director of Mobility and Transport, James Farias explains the TSF that the new rules are essential to meet European pollution laws. In 2013, once again, Lisbon exceeded EU limits and is liable to pay a fine. The officer explains that with the rules on old cars, in 2015 the city should be able to stay within European limits.

The camera has for several years a plan to implement an automated system to identify and fine antique cars entering the restricted areas. However, the project never got off the ground and James Farias says it is being studied how best to put this plan in place, including the locations of future surveillance cameras. For now the priority is to campaign for drivers through the Municipal Police to do after an assessment of the violation rate.
