Google begins testing modular phone in Puerto Rico – TeK.sapo

The concept that wants to take custom smartphones to 6 billion people for a price from $ 50 will be further tested this year in Puerto Rico, a market chosen for the first pilot ARA.
 

According to those responsible for the project, Puerto Rico has a strong penetration using mobile phones and 75% of the population accesses the Internet through smartphones. There is still considering the fact that a free trade zone where they can be imported more easily modules. Competition between operators has enabled Google close agreement with two of the companies, the Open Mobile and Claro.
 

The new version was called Spiral 3 and was last shown in Google’s conference dedicated to the project. The company intends to move forward already this year with 20 to 30 different modules, including a high-density battery and a 13 megapixel camera.
 

The modular smartphone concept was born at Motorola when the company belonged to the Google universe, and remained in the North American giant when the group was sold to Lenovo, one of the most cherished ideas for the owner of Android in field devices.
 
 
 
 

The project already has 50 hardware manufacturers that will contribute to the various modules, since the processors connectivity chips, past the cameras and batteries.
