UAlg shows inventions in the Makers Faire Lisbon – Windward Online

The University of the Algarve, through various projects carried out by students and researchers will attend the second edition of the Makers Faire Lisbon, which runs until Sunday, September 20, the Knowledge Pavilion, in Nations Park, in Lisbon .

In an event that you want to display creative inventions, UAlg will be represented twenty-six projects for a total of one hundred, developed by students and researchers from such diverse areas as the Electrical Engineering and Electronics, Engineering Informatics, Education and Communication, Marine Sciences and Electronics Engineering and Telecommunications.

3D printer a wide range of camera, fitted gloves gyro for reading gestures, cutting machines controlled by computer technology used to propulsion of spacecraft, a geodesic dome, a motorized system of tracking low-orbiting satellites, are some of the projects that the makers of UAlg will show and publicize this initiative.

Contrary to what happens at fairs dedicated to technology and creativity, the Makers Faire Lisbon aims to help the makers to disclose their projects, explain how they work and even provide all information so that ordinary citizens the can replicate.

In the opinion of Jorge Semião, professor of the Superior Engineering Institute (ISE) of UAlg, this is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate “the potential technologies and existing engineering within the bosom of UAlg, both quantitatively as qualitatively” .

Most of the twenty-six Algarve projects are developed within the bosom of UAlg, specifically in eLab Hackerspace a prototyping lab, digital manufacturing and knowledge sharing, based in the School of Engineering ( ISE), Campus da Penha.

This lab, which emerged in 2011 after the transformation of the core of students of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, has earned two national and three international awards and was one of thirty-two hackerspaces around the world to be awarded by one of the best 3D printers on the market. It is currently the oldest hackerspace within an institution of higher education

Already last year several researchers UAlg participated in the Mini Maker Faire, also in Lisbon, bringing to the Algarve two awards:. One to one high voltage transformer which produces visible lightning bolts and another by the number of projects submitted and the contribution to the event’s curators team.
