Quadriplegic suspends hunger strike after meeting with government - TVI24

Eduardo Jorge, the citizen quadriplegic who intended to start this Monday a hunger strike in front of Parliament, suspended the protest after receiving assurances that the disabled can choose a caregiver at home.

“Go create a law that allows the terms choice between going to a nursing home or stay in our homes with a caregiver,” he said, speaking to Lusa, after meeting with the Secretary of State for Social Security, Augustine Branquinho, responsible National Institute for Rehabilitation and the committee accompanying disability issues.

According to Eduardo Jorge, the disabled are now representing mostly installed in homes for the elderly, regardless of age have and expenses could amount to 2,000 euros.

With the method proposed, the rule would reduce costs. “We want to stay in our homes and we do not need to pay 2,000 euros to a caregiver,” he assured.

Following the initiative today, a meeting was scheduled for January between the parties, to assess the contributions however collected through an email address created for this purpose – vidaindependente@inr.pt.

According to this citizen, the idea is to give a period of 60 days to collect opinions to include a discussion aimed at creating a new law enshrining the option of choice.
