Chrysler had originally peitado NHTSA, North American agency that regulates the safety of vehicles, and refused to do a recall of 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty from 2002 to 2007. However, today the automaker turned back and make the call.
In a short statement, Chrysler said: “The Chrysler Group recognizes that this issue has raised concerns for their customers and want to take a step forward, according to NHTSA to provide additional measures to complement the safety of their vehicles. “
The reason for the initial request of NHTSA’s fuel tank, located near the rear axle, which can break off and cause a fire.
The automaker said the inspections will cover 1.56 million units of Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty. The owners of Grand Cherokee 1999 to 2004 will receive a letter informing them to attend the inspections only if they have the fuel tank installed in the rear of the car.
