Today begins the summer and forecasts of the Sea Portuguese Institute and the Atmosphere (IPMA) indicate that the high temperatures this early week of around 30 degrees, will be entitled to the station.

By 23h34 on Monday, the inhabitants of the northern hemisphere enter the summer, said the Astronomical Observatory of Lisbon. After this Summer Solstice, the hottest season lasts for about 94 days, until 22 September when, by 15h21, takes the Autumn Equinox.

This is the longest day of the year, the sun was born at 6:12 a.m. and will only put at 21.05, and temperatures should remain high throughout the day, no rain records on the mainland and Madeira. According to IPMA, only some Azorean islands enter the season with periods of rain, a situation that is expected to last all week.

On the mainland, the rest of the week is forecast to warm above 35 degrees interior of the country, although temperatures will reach above the northern coast. Oporto and Viana do Castelo can expect temperatures around 25 degrees.

A solstice occurs when the Sun, during its movement apparent rotation around the Earth, reaches the maximum position and a minimum of time the equator. The maximum in the summer solstice in June, the day is the longest of the year; and the minimum in winter solstice in December, when the night is the biggest of the year.

According to the director of the Astronomical Observatory of Lisbon, Rui Jorge Augustine, the word solstitium , of Latin origin, “is associated with the idea that the sun must be stopped, when it reaches its highest or lowest position in the sky.”
