Government elects priority schools to remove asbestos – Journal News

The Government announced Wednesday that it will give priority to the removal of asbestos from public buildings with projects increasing energy efficiency guarantee.

“There are 2 000 public buildings still with asbestos” and without allocation of funds for the work for its withdrawal, said today the Minister of the environment.

John Matos Fernandes spoke after the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers dedicated to the environment and held at the Arrábida convent in the county Setubal.

According to the minister, “the prioritization of investments to be done and it is up to each ministry to promote the works for efficiency.”

the works of asbestos can be performed through program for the energy efficiency of buildings in the public administration, an area that has a budget of EUR 200 million.

in the Operational Programme for Sustainability and efficiency in Resource Use (POSEUR), there is a portion allocated to energy efficiency of buildings that “will give priority to the removal of asbestos from buildings to provide financial muscle” this task.

the statement of the Council of Ministers also notes that the National Fund for Rehabilitation of Built will be in full operation in October and will be presented projects from today.

“During the year 2017 begin the works and in cases of shallow interventions houses can reach the market this year,” advanced the minister.

the official stressed that the policy of his Ministry develops from the decarbonisation of society, implementation of the circular economy and development of the area.

the Government also approved the reduction of overuse of individual road transport in metropolitan areas (89.3%), placing the rails companies in Lisbon and STCP (transport Society Collective of Porto), in the region of Porto, within the scope of authorities.

the Council of Ministers was held to mark the World Environment Day, celebrated on Sunday.
