Google finances reconstruction system 3D cities created at the University of Coimbra

A detailed reconstruction system in three dimensions of urban environments developed by a team the Faculty of Technology Sciences, University of Coimbra was funded by Google.

A system that gets reconstructions in three dimensions (3D) detailed cities, developed by a team of researchers from the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra (FCTUC) received funding from Google.

Applications like “Google Street View” gives a 3D perspective of the streets but limited to the point of view of the vehicle that captured the images. However, according to the statement sent to newsrooms, this system developed at the University of Coimbra goes further and allows for “immersive experience”.

According to Carolina Raposo, John Baker and Gabriel Falcon, the researchers responsible for the project, the underlying new to this technology “is that this algorithm [that is in the system] is based on the use of planes, not only to describe the scene but also to calculate the camera motion. This makes the 3D models are generated automatically and stored in a very compact form (as opposed to existing methods that work with point cloud), allowing its rapid transmission “.

” This technology is able to work with a small number of images. This is because it is common for the same plan to be ‘seen’ by the cameras in remote locations, allowing you to recover movement. Such not the case with current methods that require images to be acquired in physically close positions and thus require much more information, “they added in a statement.

This project, which is still at the prototype stage , caught the attention of Google, which selected the following “a global contest of ideas very competitive, with acceptance rates of around 15%, and subsequently funded.”
