EDP has until 2020 to replace nearly five million electricity meters.

The European Union requires the installation of 4.8 million smart meters in Portugal over the next five years.

According to the Journal News, for the operation are needed EUR 600 million. So far, the EU funds provide EUR 120 million.

For consumers is a guarantee that the prices to be charged to customers may never rise due to the cost of new appliances.

Smart meters are devices capable of alerting consumers to high consumption, sending scores remotely or reconnect electricity without waiting for technicians.
