A study Hachem Sadikki of the University of Massachusetts (USA), indicates that by the year 2100 the vast majority of Facebook profiles will be of persons now deceased.
Do you wonder how will Facebook around the year 2100? Well, it’s a kind of virtual cemetery. That’s the conclusion of a survey carried out by Hachem Sadikki of the University of Massachusetts.
None of us will probably be alive at that time, but for our grandchildren Facebook will be something truly macabre. The Sadikki projection indicates that by the year 2098 the number of people already dead registered in this social network will go well beyond the number of active users.
Currently, Facebook has a feature that transforms the deceased profiles in “memorial”. Serves for family members and friends of the dead can send messages to them as if they were still alive. Sadikki worked with this data to develop its projection and also used the high growth social network data, population growth and mortality rate estimated by the US Disease Control Center.
He came to conclusion that Facebook’s growth will eventually stagnate, causing the number of deceased users exceed the assets. The expected date for the virtual cemetery in the US is the year 2098, but in countries where people have a life expectancy less this sad scenario happen much earlier
