In a statement, PJ concerns be a “very high” number of complaints, adding that in recent times have been developed investigations seem to indicate being in progress “a massive form of extortion committed by internet with users of social networks.”
According to PJ, people apparently headquartered abroad and under the cover of an attractive young woman establish virtual friendship with people in their social network accounts like Facebook.
After “skillfully” having collected the elements that identify the victim in the social network and friends, the “supposed” young can that come into direct contact through a chat room with video, like Skype, conducting dialogue in order to achieve images that are of great social embarrassment.
From the moment you are in to these images tell the other person that fact, show you the pictures, tell her that know their social identity and their circle of friends, requiring the person to transfer high monetary values to recipients living outside of Portugal, under the threat of disclosing to the public the images if the funds are not transferred.
In the document, the PJ states that the requirements for transfers of funds are maintained even in situations where victims gave in to blackmail while the images are published on social networks, under the pretext that the person visible in the images is pedophile and harassed children with those images.
“These facts are highly detrimental to the honor of the victims and, in addition to financial loss, cause natural constraints in their social relations,” concluded the document of national PJ direction.
