Hospitals can save 518 million

Public hospitals still have a “high margin” to reduce costs, completed an assessment of the Central Administration of the Health System (ACSS). If all units were efficient and follow the example of the top five hospitals, the overall savings could reach 518 million per year.
“Generally speaking, we can assume that all institutions behave as the most efficient in your group, there is a margin of saving in the order of 518 million euros”, according to a report by ACSS.

Hospitals in the region of Lisbon are the ones that banks have to reduce costs. If they were managed efficiently, only hospitals in Lisbon and Tagus Valley together could save almost 275 million euros.
The health region of Alentejo is the least amount for savings has. Even with the efficiency level of the best hospitals, it could just save 22.5 million euros.
In regions of the Algarve, the cost savings could reach 48 million in the North and to 78.6 million euros.
The remaining savings would be achieved at the expense of reducing the supply of external services in about 190 million and the decrease in costs of consumables clinical (63.2 million).
