Digital Foundry: we tested the PS2 emulator on the PS4 – Eurogamer.pt

For a long time we spoke that the PS1 and PS2 classics were on their way to PlayStation 4, by emulator. There is much the same, even thought Sony had canceled the project. Originally, developers were informed of the existence of the emulator at the same time they were informed of the PlayStation Now service in January 2014. Since then, the only clues of its existence came in the form of the PEGI ratings, along with references to the classic PS2 average lists shared in testing the firmware 3.0 of the PS4.

The PS2 PS4 emulator is now available, released without any fuss. A new bundle for the PS4 Star Wars was released, in which we have four ‘classics’: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. All delivered in a single PSN code, instead of being on the disk. Three of these games are the PS2 and was transferred after it became clear that run through the emulator.

How do we know? First, a notification tells us that the select and start are assigned to the left and right sides of the trackpad the DualShock 4. games other studios can not access the OS this way. Second, as the emulator PS2 PS3, there is a system for managing memory cards PS2. Third, the classic PS2 logo appears poorly upscaled when initial each game. Finally, all notices in-game on buttons are related to the control of the PS2. – Nothing has changed, ruling out the possibility of a remaster

Upscaling ? It’s probably not what you wanted to hear because the older games have not aged well visually, disappointing given that Sony initially said they would run in high definition. Well, we have good and bad things. All 2D art receives upscaling – nothing can be done about this and can get ugly. However, the 3D elements are much improved and the resolution increased.

A video that talks about the PS2 emulator on the PS4. It’s amazing -. Shame we so mediocre games to test

The original games of PS2 ran a variety of number of pixels but 512×448 and 640×448 were common (God of War 2 left choose between the two). It is still the early days of analysis but first impressions suggest that the emulator runs the native 1292×896. We have two black lines at the top and bottom of the image before being converted to 1080p. We have 4x more pixels – possibly more, depending on the game. The texture filtering looks better but we thought it might be only because of the extra resolution

The general impressions are positive. – Little can be done about the goods 2D but improvements in 3D things are welcome. It seems that is used a post-processing effect to mimic anti-aliasing – the edges are smooth and with little glare. There is also something worth mentioning: Support has been added for trophies emulator – something we confirmed to unlock one in Racer Revenge. You can even discard the emulator by choice (the original had no achievements) – but this patent explains how it’s done. Basically, it seems that the emulator registers certain conditions necessary for specific activation trophies – believe that is to read the state of the game while playing

The biggest issue is performance.. We improvements in image quality but run as expected – or better? It’s still early and there’s not much to analyze PS2 games, have a clean image 480p is not easy – even in PS3 backward compatible. However, there are good indications. The emulator clearly runs the games more smoothly, Jedi Starfighter going to 60fps while the original PS2 can not such a thing.

not tested yet but looking at Racer Revenge side by side reveals more improvements in fluidity. These are not the most demanding games and others may have a totally different performance – but imagine Metal Gear Solid 3 with ratios of upper frames, the God of War games running with fixed frames ratio, or Gran Turismo 4 without tearing . We look forward to see what this emulator is capable of.

The arrival of PS2 to PS4 emulator is great news – we are waiting for comment from Sony but it is strange that a piece so lovely technology like this that will excite many fans has passed without mention. The PS2 is a the classic consoles and the ability to access the retro titles with enhanced visuals is a beautiful proposal. It is unfortunate that the emulator has arrived with a trio of mediocre games rather than a star alignment.

Also, we do not avoid questioning whether the arrival of backward compatibility to the Microsoft Xbox One had an effect on Sony’s strategy. The Redmond giant allows players to use their discs to play Xbox 360 games console in the latest (but as a ‘key’ that enables a transfer). However, everything suggests – without forgetting the particulars in the ESRB PS2 classics – that Sony’s plans for PS2 emulator involve selling these games in digital format as the previous generation. The PS2 emulator is now in the hands of consumers so we hope that Sony plans to be revealed soon

Update -. 09:14

Sony He confirmed that you are using a PS2 emulator for the PlayStation 4 but does not comment on plans for the project. “We use a PS2 emulator to present the games of this console in the current generation,” said Sony to Wired. “We have nothing to comment at this time.”
