Hackers make state computers hostages – SAPO Tek

Several state agencies have been the target of cyber attacks designed to make attempts hostage affected machines and access to information that is there. The news is advanced by the Journal News, which explains that the attempted attacks are transmitted through email messages with attached files that contain malware.

When the user opens the message and attachment gives the steps required for the attack to succeed. The malware in question is ransomware, malicious code created to appropriate digital information and block access to machines that keep until a ransom is paid.

The problem was confirmed to the Journal News by José Carlos Martins, coordinator of the National Cyber Security Center, but the charge ensures that attempts have been detected in time and “before they can take effect.” The same responsibility also ensures that the state does not negotiate with criminals and not reveal the amounts requested by attackers.

Among private, the similar types of attacks that have been recorded in recent times call for a minimum of 500 euros for return access to affected machines. The crime is common and earlier this year was even among the most common, along with the Sextortion.

This type of attacks are mainly – and in most cases the sole – purpose of ensuring financial benefits. In some cases it can however also be a route for data collection for other purposes. In statements made to JN, José Martins ensured that these attempts to ransomware only have the financial motivation and do not hide other hazards, or pose risks to state infrastructure.
