Apple will have to pay 760 million euros to university for patent use – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

Apple lost a lawsuit against the University of Wisconsin and will have to pay compensation of 862 million dollars (760 million). The university claimed that the technology of a microchip had been used by Apple without permission.

The University of Wisconsin, who had the patent technology to improve the efficiency of microchips from 1998 will receive 862 million dollars of Apple, after the technology giant having lost the court battle, writes this Thursday, September 14th, the BBC.

The US authorities considered Apple ignored all approaches from the university to license the patent, which would allow Tim Cook company continued to use technology in microchips for a fee.

The university claims that Apple infringed a patent consciously and if the court agrees, the sum payable by the company may be even higher.

Apple used these microchips without the permission of the University of Wisconsin in some iPhones, as 5s, 6:06 Plus. The university also has complained that this technology was used in the latest models, 6s and 6s Plus.

In 2008, the University of Wisconsin had sued Intel because of the same patent. The case was settled out of court, with a sum that has not been revealed.
