Termites are an inspiration to build robots - Público.pt

A team of U.S. researchers inspired by the termites, also known as white ants, to devise robots that run autonomously and perform complex constructions.

How insects, these robots can carry, or add elements to build a structure or even build a ladder to get to other places, explained the authors of the project, scientists from Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA.

Robots obey basic instructions to run a construction project independently, just like termites. The project was presented at the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, held in Chicago until next Monday.

Most construction projects developed by humans is performed by qualified personnel as part of a plan and a hierarchical organization, said Justin Werfel, the Wyss Institute at Harvard, one of the leaders of the work, also published this Friday Friday journal Science .

“Normally, there is a detailed plan for execution of the work and the workers are supervised by bosses who give them orders,” said Justin Werfel. “In colonies of social insects, the queen does not give individual instructions to each member. Each termite does not know what the others are doing or the state of the construction “of complex structures, the researcher added.

termites, ants and, in coordinating group through an indirect communication method, termed “stigmergy”, according to which the elements communicate with each other to modify the environment explained the research team, comprising computer, electronic engineers and biologists.
