Beetles driven by opera stars or to mice, the ... - Público.pt

When was the last time you felt attractive? It may have been after dinner with a few glasses of wine the most. It was already known that alcohol makes others more attractive in the eyes of a drunk person, but a team noted now that drinkers also feel more attractive, which is not necessarily true. Who says they are the authors of the study on Thursday night received the Ig Nobel Psychology, one of the ten prizes that “first make people laugh and then force them to think.”

This was the 23rd edition of Ceremony First Annual Ig Nobel Awards in the historic Sanders Theatre at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. The name of the award is a clear reference to the prestigious Nobel Prize, but in this case, are given to researchers whose studies cause at least bewilderment. The ceremony, produced by the science humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research , started a promised launch paper airplanes made by the people who were in the audience against a target man on stage, something that could only happen the Ig Nobel (where humor is always present).

During the show, representatives from seven of the ten awards came on stage to explain their research. The organization has not paid such movements. “People always observed that drunkards think others are more attractive but our study is the first to discover that drinking alcohol makes people think they are her own, more attractive,” said Brad Bushman BBC News, an author team who published this work in 2012 in the journal Psychology British Journal .

Researchers gave alcoholic beverages to participants who later described himself before a group of evaluators. Some of the participants who took a placebo drink, being convinced that it was an alcoholic beverage, also felt more attractive. The evaluation panel also had to evaluate the sexual attractiveness of the participants, and do not come to the same conclusions. “Although people may think that they become more attractive when they’re intoxicated, other people [who are sober] do not think the same,” adds Bushman. “It was just an illusion in their minds.”

Epidemic penis cut (sometimes eaten by ducks)

winning entries may be years or even decades. The Ig Nobel Prize for Public Health, one of the favorites for this edition Marc Abrahams, editor of Annals of Improbable Research, was published in 1983 in the journal American Journal of Surgery . Kazian Bhanganada and his team of Thai doctors have developed a technique to treat victims of amputation of the penis, a problem that was widespread in the 1970s.

“There was even an epidemic, and many victims were taken to the same hospital where doctors have become quite good at dealing with this,” said Marc Abrahams, quoted by Reuters. These men had his penis cut off by angry women for betrayals. “The doctors recommended these techniques less when the penis was amputated partially eaten by ducks,” said Marc Abrahams, explaining that often in Thailand houses were built on stilts under which live ducks.

premium archeology was given to Brian Crandall and Stahl Peter the strange work published in 1995 in the Journal of Archaeological Science . In this study, we analyzed the feces of a man who swallowed – without chewing – A shrew previously treated and boiled. The aim was to observe what happened to the bones of small animals after going through all the digestive fluids. Apparently, this knowledge can be important when analyzing skeletal remains in archaeological context.

Beetles Planetarium

Feces were also involved in the study who won the prize set Biology and Astronomy. A team from South Africa with researchers from institutions in Sweden, Australia and the United Kingdom confirmed that the insect Scarabaeus satyrus , a beetle that carries African dung balls to feed their larvae, guided by the Sun , the moon, and on nights where there is no moon, guided by the Milky Way.

“We are delighted to win the Ig Nobel” says Marcus Byrne said in a statement, an author of the study. “We think the Ig Nobel also highlights research that is born of curiosity and that leads to an understanding of how our remarkable world,” he added.

team was questioned how these beetles found the right way when carrying the stools to their nest. Taparem the eyes of beetles at night, they found routes were complicated and not linear routes maybe go home. Then when put beetles in Johannesburg Planetarium and put a sky with the Milky Way, they soon found their way out than when they had few stars in the sky of the Planetarium or when the sky was dark. The work was published earlier this year in the journal Current Biology .

Verdi-1-0 Enya

Prize in Medicine was given a team of University of Tokyo who studied the effects of classical music on mice that had done a heart transplant. The mice generally survived seven days after the operation. But when listening to La Traviata, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, survive 27 days. With the Irish singer Enya, mice resisted only 11 days.

Prize in Physics was awarded to a team that found that, with the existing gravity on the moon, some people could run on a water surface. A group of researchers discovered that, in 2002, the compound that makes people cry when they cut onions won the Prize in Chemistry. Already the Ig Nobel Prize Odds for a job that was determined that 1) the longer the cows were lying they would be more likely to rise quickly, and 2) once standing, it was difficult to guess when come back to lie down. The Engineering Prize was given to an American who has died, in 1972, an invention patented electro-mechanical to catch hijackers.

Finally, the Ig Nobel Peace Prize was divided between Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus, by criminalizing public acclaim, and the State Police in Belarus, for having imprisoned a man who clapped. Lukashenko did not show up at Harvard to receive the prize.

In 2014, by this time, there will be more Ig Nobel Prizes. Or as Marc Abrahams said in closing this edition: “If you did not win tonight one of the Ig Nobel Prizes – and especially if won – I wish you better luck next year.”
