The Splashdata passwords management firm published last Tuesday, the fifth edition of its annual ranking of the 25 worst passwords used. To compile this list, the firm was based on more than two million passwords – mostly coming from North America and Europe -. That were released during the past year
The classification criteria for list building to be based on the number of users that use these passwords.
To the delight of hacking , the top of this list remains unchanged with “123456″ to remain as the most common password. In fact, just look at the line of your keypad numbers to find 7 of the top 15 passwords, seeing in the top sequence variations such as “12345678″ (3) “123456789″ (6) or “1234567″ (9th ).
In the second place, it remains the classic “password”. The feet of the podium is qwerty , which rose one place in relation to 2014. Literally on the same line is qwertyuiop , a novelty this year in 22nd place.
In fact, there are nine premieres in 2015. classification these stand out welcome , the best placed of the newcomers in 11th place, the creative 1qaz2wsx in 15th (the first two ‘diagonal’ to the left of your keyboard), or passw0rd (zero) and starwars to close the table.
The greatest increase compared to 2014, with 3 seats is football that now occupies the 7th position, while the largest decrease was attributed to dragon , now in the 16th position.
Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData says notice that “people have made efforts to use greater passwords” but that they “are based on simple patterns,” which does not help users to be more protected against possible attacks. He also noted the strength of references to popular culture and sports, which are also discouraged. “We hope that with more publicity about how risky it is to have weak passwords, more people will take the necessary steps to strengthen their passwords and use different other sites ” he said.
In order to promote security, Splashdata released some signs to minimize the risk of users having their pirated accounts, using passwords at least 12 characters and avoid repeating passwords on many different sites. If you have no creativity or memory to do so, it may also consider using a password manager like LastPass , 1Password or the Splashdata manager himself, the SplashID .
