Legionella: 43 year old man died on Thursday – Medical Journal

A 43 year old man died on Thursday, the victim of infection legionella bacteria, said the agency Lusa a source of Vila Franca de Xira Hospital.

The same source did not require the admission date of the man, nor revealed more details.

This is the 11th fatality of the outbreak of legionella in Vila Franca de Xira area, which caused more than 330 infected, a number that makes this outbreak in the third with more cases in the world and the largest in Portugal.

The first cases of this outbreak of legionella were known on 7 November.

Considered extinct on 21 November, the outbreak originated in a cooling tower of fertilizer company in Portugal, as confirmed by the authorities.

The Ministry Public is investigating the events and the possibility of an environmental crime remains open.
